October 20th 2008 on Plasmonic Lounge

PL: Where did you grow up?
BC: I grew up in suburbs of Cleveland and Detroit. I once visited Rochester when I was a little kid and got bit by a beetle. I swore I would never return but ended up in college there anyway.
PL: How/Why did you end up at UR?
BC: It was the best school I got into. At the time it was also one of the only schools with a film dept. a good English dept and a radio station.
PL: What was your major?
BC: Film Studies.
PL: What activities did you participate in while studying at UR (besides the radio)?
BC: I was on the swim team. I also was a class senator for a year although politics didn’t really agree with me. I participated in the Danish International Studies program which I highly recommend and spent a semester in Copenhagen during Junior year. I was in a fraternity too but I tried to be friends with everyone and stay away from being too much of a frat boy.
PL: Are there any other comments/funny stories about your experience at UR?
BC: I liked a lot of aspects of UR but I also couldn’t wait to get out and move to California. The lack of city nightlife is kind of huge in Rochester so I made up for it after college. At UR I did everything a typical drunk ass kid can do to cause trouble and try to get laid but I also got really good grades. I think I went to Nick Tahoe’s 1000 times if that is still around.
PL: When did you have your radio show at UR?
BC: I had it the first two years and then the radio station was shut down due to frequency conflicts with the police emergency line. So I didn’t actually have a show after my Junior year started. It was a bummer. Some true believers kept Djing on AM but I gave it up.
PL: What was the show’s name?
BC: The Power Move
PL: How did your experiences at the UR radio station influence your progression into the career you have now?
BC: It was a hip-hop show. I think it was a good basis but I didn’t go straight into music after college so I’m not sure how much the show really influenced me. It did keep me involved in music as I was moving away from music into film.
PL: Did you ever think that you would be doing what you do now when you were at UR?
BC: No, I was sure I was going to be a screenwriter/director. My friend Nigel Richards (owner of 611 records, Philly) was one year ahead of me. I remember thinking the music he was doing was crazy and that it wasn’t real music. He would tell me about these Philly parties and I would have no idea what he was talking about. Lol, then I followed in his footsteps 10 years later!
PL: Do you prefer managing the label(s), producing music, or DJing? Why?
BC: Producing is the hardest and the most rewarding but it is only rewarding once you get to the DJing. They go hand in hand. Label management is a pain but I like some aspects of it. I’m really driven to make the label succeed by keeping the quality high. Once the quality starts to waiver your label is over in my opinion.
PL: Are there any big events coming up that you can tell us about?
BC: Yes all the time. In America we now have a quarterly dirtybird party in San Francisco. We have also started branching out and having dirtybird events in places like London, Berlin, Paris, etc. I also DJ about two weekends a month in Europe and one weekend here in the US.
PL: Are there any new releases that you can tell us about?
BC: Yes, next up on dirtybird is our newest artist, J.Phlip. She is a Chicago native living in SF and she is a champion DJ (literally, she won a national magazine championship.) The release is called “Rumble Rumble”
On mothership we are releasing singles from the new Catz ‘n Dogz album all the way through January with remixes by Gudio Schneider, Guillame and the Coutu Dumonts, Voodeux, and the Italoboyz.
BC: The snow is about to begin up there. Don’t get too depressed. Some people say that college is the best 4 years of your life. That isn’t true at all!
